A powerful earthquake panicked residents of Indonesia’s Sulawesi island, officials and news reports said. No injuries or damage were immediately reported.
The quake was centered beneath the Flores Sea about 40 miles west of Bau Bau town, a meteorology official said.
The U.S. Geological Survey said the earthquake had a magnitude of 6.5 and was not related to the magnitude 9 quake on Dec. 26 that triggered a tsunami that killed more than 169,000 people across southern Asia and eastern Africa.
