From Times Wire Reports
Typhoon Haitang lashed communities along Taiwan’s northeast coast today as officials ordered schools, government offices and financial markets to close.
Torrential rains poured on the capital, Taipei, at daybreak while winds up to 113 mph uprooted trees and dislodged billboards in the northern part of the island.
The storm’s full impact was due in the late afternoon, when its eye was forecast to pass just south of Taipei. The capital’s streets were almost deserted, and air and rail service came to a standstill.
