Clemson Wins in a Rout, 31-10

James Davis ran for a career-high 143 yards and two touchdowns before leaving with a broken wrist, Charlie Whitehurst threw for two more scores and the Clemson Tigers beat North Carolina State, 31-10, on Thursday night at Raleigh, N.C., for their first win in more than a month.

To qualify for a bowl, North Carolina State, 2-3 overall and 1-3 in the Atlantic Coast Conference, must win four of its final six games, a stretch that includes trips to No. 4 Florida State and No. 14 Boston College.

Clemson (3-3, 2-3) won with a balanced offensive performance, piling up 489 yards and burning the Wolfpack with a variety of deceptive plays.

Whitehurst completed 22 of 31 passes for 246 yards.

Virginia Tech Coach Frank Beamer has a new seven-year contract that will boost his annual salary from $1.4 million to $2 million and runs through 2012 season.

The deal has an option for three additional years.

Eric Neihouse kicked a 35-yard field goal as time expired to give Arkansas State a 39-36 victory over Louisiana Lafayette in a Sun Belt Conference matchup at Jonesboro, Ark. Arkansas State (3-3, 2-1) trailed, 29-14, entering the fourth quarter before rallying to beat Louisiana Lafayette (1-5, 0-2).
