Brazilians voting in a national referendum rejected a proposal to ban the sale of guns. With more than 92% of the ballots counted, 64% of voters opposed the ban and 36% backed it, election officials said.
Brazil has 100 million fewer citizens than the U.S. but 25% more gun deaths, nearly 40,000 a year. Supporters argued that gun control was the best way to stanch the violence, and opponents played on people’s fears the police can’t protect them.
