An unidentified woman was seriously injured Saturday when an object she found that appeared to be a pen exploded in her face on a street near Rosemead High School.
Authorities said it was the second time in less than a month that someone in the area had been injured by a booby-trapped explosive device.
The explosion occurred about 7 a.m. on Rosemead Boulevard at Mission Drive, said Deputy Tania Plunkett, a spokeswoman for the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
The woman was treated for serious injuries to her face and hands at a hospital.
On Aug. 24, a man suffered minor injuries after picking up a similar object that exploded.
“Everyone should take caution when retrieving any items off the ground,” Plunkett said.
