Getting a free pass from the critics

IT constantly baffles me how certain performers become critic’s pets. Currently, we have Sarah Silverman, Catherine Keener, Steve Carrell and now, Jack Black [“Funny in Love,” Dec. 3].
I’m not saying that all or any of them aren’t talented, but it is confounding how uncritical and worshipful outlets such as the Los Angeles Times are to these figures regardless of the quality of their current works.
