Graham Center wins dance rights

The U.S. 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals has affirmed an earlier district judge’s ruling that seven dances choreographed by Martha Graham, including “Embattled Garden” and “Phaedra,” belong to the Martha Graham Center for Contemporary Dance rather than to Ron Protas, Graham’s personal heir.

“This was the final resolution to the issue of ownership of all the existing Graham dances, sets and costumes,” the lawyer for the Graham Center, Katherine B. Forrest, said Thursday.
