Sharks Power Past Red Wings, 5-1

Joe Thornton had a goal and three assists, and Jonathan Cheechoo also scored one of San Jose’s franchise-record five power-play goals in a 5-1 victory by the host Sharks over the depleted Detroit Red Wings on Tuesday night.
It was the fourth win in a row for the Sharks.
The Red Wings, whose six-game winning streak ended, played without Nicklas Lidstrom, Niklas Kronwall, Mikael Samuelsson, Henrik Zetterberg and Tomas Holmstrom, all members of Sweden’s gold-medal-winning team at the Turin Olympics, who had an extra day off.
Vancouver 2, Calgary 1 -- Markus Naslund and Anson Carter scored nine seconds apart in the second period at Calgary, Canada, and the Canucks moved into a first-place tie with the Flames atop the Northwest Division.
Vancouver has won three games in a row against its division rival after losing the first four meetings this season.
Florida 8, Tampa Bay 2 -- Chris Gratton, Olli Jokinen and Joe Nieuwendyk each had two goals for the Panthers at Tampa, Fla.
Roberto Luongo made 32 saves for Florida. John Grahame was pulled at 3 minutes 35 seconds of the second period after giving up four goals on 13 shots.
Montreal 5, New York Islanders 3 -- Christopher Higgins scored two goals to lead the Canadiens at Uniondale, N.Y.
Cristobal Huet made 32 saves for the Canadiens.
Washington 5, Toronto 3 -- Matt Pettinger scored twice at Toronto, and the Capitals ended a four-game losing streak.
Capital rookie Alexander Ovechkin scored his 37th goal.
Colorado 4, Minnesota 2 -- Milan Hejduk had a goal and an assist at Denver, and David Aebischer stopped 33 shots to improve to 4-0 against the Wild this season.
