Endangered Status Spurs Puma Shooting Review

Results of a state investigation into the shooting of a mountain lion in a Rancho Santa Margarita backyard have been turned over to the Orange County district attorney’s office, officials said.
Bill Hill, a former Stanton police officer, said he shot the 90-pound animal in his backyard Jan. 17 because he feared it would attack him.
The shooting was investigated by the state Department of Fish and Game; prosecutors are reviewing the findings to determine whether to file criminal charges, a district attorney spokeswoman said. Mountain lions are a protected species.
