A driver suspected of hit-and-run was still at large Thursday and the crossing guard he’s accused of striking remained hospitalized.
Authorities said Jose Francisco Valez Serrano abandoned his red 1986 Toyota pickup after dragging Jamie Meza about 45 feet. Police were led to his Artesia home by a police dog but he was gone, said Los Angeles Sheriff’s Deputy Charles McClure.
Meza, 50, of Whittier, was taken to Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center in serious condition with head injuries and a broken leg. He has been upgraded to fair condition, a hospital spokesperson said.
