Evacuations Planned After Volcano Alert

Indonesia raised the alert at its Merapi volcano to the highest level, meaning an eruption may be imminent, an official said.
Thousands of residents on the slopes of the mountain in densely populated Central Java province will immediately be evacuated, said Bambang Dwiyanto, head of the region’s volcanology center.
The 9,700-foot peak has been rumbling in recent weeks and spewing clouds of black ash and some lava. Many people closest to the crater had already been evacuated.
