CBS rallies with ratings for newscast
For the first time in almost five years, “CBS Evening News” beat out ABC’s “World News Tonight” in the weekly ratings report, claiming second place with an average of 7.39 million viewers for the week of May 8, according to Nielsen Media Research figures released Tuesday.
ABC sank to third place with 7.31 million viewers, although its broadcast did edge out CBS among the key 25- to 54-year-old demographic prized by advertisers for news programming. “NBC Nightly News” remained in first place with 8.41 million viewers for the week.
The last time CBS beat ABC in the weekly evening news ratings was August 2001, and it hasn’t had a sustained run in second place since July 1998.
