Barfield’s Walk-Off Homer Lifts Padres

SAN DIEGO — With his first game-winning home run, rookie Josh Barfield gave the San Diego Padres a boost in the playoff chase and something to kid his famous father about.

Barfield hit a three-run homer with one out in the ninth inning to lift the Padres over the Colorado Rockies, 7-5, Monday night.

The defending National League West champions kept their 1 1/2 -game lead over Philadelphia in the NL wild-card race and pulled to within two games of the first-place Dodgers in the division.

Barfield, the son of former American League home run champion Jesse Barfield, homered on a 1-and-2 pitch from All-Star closer Brian Fuentes for his 12th homer this season and first walk-off shot at any level.

“Tonight I’m going to call my dad and give him a hard time,” Barfield said. “I think I’ve got one more walk-off to go to catch him.”

Barfield finished with four runs batted in, atoning for an error that helped the Rockies take the lead in the fifth inning.

at Florida 8, Arizona 5: Joe Borchard’s three-run homer capped a six-run sixth inning at Miami, and the Marlins became the first major league team to climb above .500 after being 20 games under.

Atlanta 5, at New York 0: Chuck James (8-3) gave up one hit in eight innings, a second-inning single by David Wright, scored two runs and got his first hit of the season for the Braves.

Pittsburgh 5, at Chicago 4: Xavier Nady’s three-run double capped a four-run first inning and the Pirates held off the Cubs, whose ace, Carlos Zambrano (14-6), left after 1 1/3 innings and a 5-0 deficit because of lower-back stiffness.

San Francisco 5, at Cincinnati 4: Barry Bonds hit a tying, two-run homer in the eighth inning and Shea Hillenbrand hit one in the 10th inning for the Giants. Bonds has 730 homers, 25 shy of Hank Aaron’s all-time record.
