Broaden the discussion of criticism of Israel

Re “On Israel, kid gloves -- or else,” Opinion, Sept. 1
Rosa Brooks makes some valid points in her discussion of how criticism of Israel is sometimes unfairly equated with anti-Semitism. She errs, however, when she states, “Israeli policies are a major source of discord in the Islamic world” and that resentment of those policies fuels “terrorism and instability both in Israel and around the globe.” Substitute the phrase “Israel’s existence” for “Israeli policies” and she has it right. Although it is possible to be critical of Israel without being anti-Semitic, the criticism of Israel broadcast by Islamic leaders (and others) is heavily grounded in anti-Semitism.

Yes, indeed, we must open up the dialogue about Israel. But focusing on critics insulted because they dare question Israeli policies still misses the point: It is the Palestinians who are being oppressed, vilified, imprisoned and killed. A real discussion about Mideast peace must welcome, embrace, understand and support true equality with respect for just laws -- and specifically full focus on fully implementing the Palestinian refugees’ right to return. Otherwise one very racist, apartheid Israel will continue pulverizing Palestinian homes, making more refugees.
