Early days of paint by number

CONGRATULATIONS on an excellent article on the return of the paint-by-number pictures [“From the ‘50s to Your Wall,” Aug. 31].
I’m contacting you as one of the originators of the paint-by-number wall murals of the ‘60s under the name of Mural Arts Co. It was, indeed, a fad that lasted approximately eight years. The murals were different from the smaller pics in that they ranged in size from 3 to 14 feet wide and were painted directly onto a wall’s surface by tracing the pattern through transfer paper attached to the back of the pattern.
Approximately 80,000 kits were sold before the end of the “fad.” I am now bringing these murals back.
