Salinger ‘n’ ‘Survivor’; that’s just how he rolls

Los Angeles playwright and TV writer Del Shores launched his theatrical career in the late 1980s, mining his roots as a closeted gay Southern Baptist from Texas to create such cult comedies as “The Trials and Tribulations of a Trailer Trash Housewife,” “Southern Baptist Sissies,” “Sordid Lives” and “Daddy’s Dyin’ (Who’s Got the Will?)” The latter two were made into independent films starring Beau Bridges.

His plays “Sordid Lives” and “Southern Baptist Sissies” are on a national tour starring Leslie Jordan, Delta Burke and Dale Dickey (“My Name Is Earl”), and a “Sordid Lives” sitcom is among four original series currently in development at Logo, the gay and lesbian cable TV network. Shores gave Lynne Heffley this glimpse of how he consumes culture.
