Incumbent Ousted in Presidential Election

A Western-leaning former diplomat and journalist was narrowly elected Estonia’s president, ousting the favored incumbent. Toomas Hendrik Ilves, 52, who was raised in the U.S. and has a psychology degree from Columbia University, said after defeating Arnold Ruutel, 78, that he wanted to lead the nation “more to the center of Europe.”
Ilves won 174 electoral college votes, and Ruutel won 162.
