Caretaker leader sworn in to office

From Times Wire Reports

Bangladesh’s president swore in a respected economist as head of the country’s caretaker government, trying to defuse a bloody political crisis after declaring a state of emergency and postponing Jan. 22 elections.

Fakhruddin Ahmed, a former governor of Bangladesh’s central bank and a longtime economics professor, took the oath of office from President Iajuddin Ahmed during a brief evening ceremony at the presidential palace.
