Everybody has heard one

As a veteran of the singles scene for too many years, I recognized the age-old excuse “My mother is dying” [“This Excuse Needs a Proper Burial,” Getting Personal, July 12].

Permit me to add a few more:

1) “We have an open marriage.”

NB: It’s only open for him.

2) “She won’t give me a divorce.”

NB: He hasn’t asked for one and doesn’t want one.

3) “I’m in therapy.”

NB: He hasn’t told his girlfriend or his therapist about you.

Now that I am a dating dropout, it is a huge relief to sit on the sidelines and watch the game. I don’t even keep score.
