The Police Commission on Tuesday approved the chief’s recommendation to award the Medal of Valor to 16 officers, including one for Walter Kesterson, who was killed in 1946 in an exchange of gunfire with two armed robbery suspects.
The panel also approved the medal for 13 officers who rescued 80 senior citizens from a fire at a Wilshire area retirement home in 1996 and two officers who pulled an unconscious motorist from a car that had caught fire.
“The passage of time should not diminish our desire to recognize heroes,” Commissioner Alan Skobin said.
