Accountability for Iraq war

Re “Some in GOP split with Bush on Iraq,” May 3
As a public schoolteacher, I will lose my job if I fail to meet President Bush’s No Child Left Behind benchmarks that show accountability and progress in my class. I am the mother of a Marine. It is ironic that this same administration and its Republican supporters in Congress, which wantonly squander our tax dollars and the lives of our children, tell us we have no right to expect accountability and progress with their protracted war in Iraq.

Instead of writing an article headlined “Some in GOP split with Bush on Iraq,” shouldn’t the real story be “Many Democrats disagree with Pelosi and Reid on Iraq but vote for useless bill anyway”?

President Bush is right. If the U.S. sets a date for troop withdrawal, it would signal to the terrorists in Iraq that they should prepare to take over. It would signal to the rest of the world that the U.S. is not trustworthy in its commitments to accomplish what it sets out to do. It would also signal to global terrorists that the U.S. can be defeated because they have an ally in Congress.
