Syria has postponed the implementation of a plan to require visas for Iraqis entering the country until after the Muslim holy period of Ramadan ends next month, a Foreign Ministry official said.
The rule, which was to take effect last week, would require that Iraqis obtain visas to enter Syria, home to more than a million Iraqi refugees.
The majority of about 2 million displaced Iraqis are in Syria and Jordan. Both governments complain of burdens on their social services. Jordan has already tightened entry requirements.
