No. 13 Simi Valley Royal 6, No. 12 Simi Valley 1
Top contributors: Junior Cody Buckel of Royal struck out seven, walked five and gave up four hits and one unearned run in 5 1/3 innings. Senior Bryan Berglund picked up the save. Chris Graves had a run-scoring single for Royal.
The scoop: With only one league game this week, Royal Coach Dan Maye had the luxury of using his two hard-throwing right-handers, the Pepperdine-bound Buckel and the Loyola Marymount-bound Berglund. “We have to rely on our pitching,” Buckel said. “If both of us are on, there’s a great chance we’ll come out on top.”
Why it matters: With the victory, Royal pulled into a first-place tie with Simi Valley in the Marmonte League going into spring break.
Records: Royal 12-2, 5-2; Simi Valley 10-4, 5-2.
