I just read Catharine Hamm’s “What Damage?” about Linda Kline and her experience with Budget [On the Spot, April 5] and felt the need to respond. A few years ago, my husband and I flew to Cleveland and rented a car. We returned the car after a weekend and flew home. A few weeks later, we got a letter informing us of extensive damage to the car and that we owed more than $1,000.
After contacting the rental company and refusing to pay for the damage, we researched this car and found out that three other people had rented the same car and had received the same letter.
After more research, we found out that an employee had taken the car to a fast food restaurant and damaged it, and the rental company was trying to bill the renters for the damage done by its employee.
