Burnett loses no-hit bid, but not game

ST. PETERSBURG, FLA. — A.J. Burnett took a no-hit bid into the seventh inning and the New York Yankees defeated the Tampa Bay Rays, 7-2, on Tuesday night.

Burnett (2-0), who signed an $82.5-million, five-year, free-agent deal with the Yankees in the off-season, allowed one baserunner until the seventh inning, when Carl Crawford singled to left field and later scored.

Nick Swisher homered for the third time in four games to help Burnett, who pitched eight innings, and Mark Teixeira drove in the go-ahead run with an eighth-inning sacrifice fly. Derek Jeter hit a three-run home run in the ninth inning.
