Barbaro’s brother finishes 10th in debut

The long awaited debut of Barbaro’s full brother, Nicanor, didn’t have a fairy tale ending Saturday. Nicanor ran 10th in a field of 12 in a $40,000 one-mile maiden race at Gulfstream Park in Florida.

Nicanor, a 3-year-old son of Dynaformer out of La Ville Rouge, made his debut two years and two days after 2006 Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro was euthanized as a result of complications from shattering his hind leg in the Preakness.

Nicanor stumbled at the start, made a brief move into the upper pack at the half-mile mark but faded.

Albertus Maximus, the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile champion, won the first Grade I handicap race of 2009 by taking the $500,000 Donn Handicap at 1 1/8 miles at Gulfstream Park.

Formerly trained by Vladimir Cerin, Albertus Maximus was sold privately to Shadwell Stables and won for trainer Kiaran McLaughlin.

Razov signs new deal, has surgery

Chivas USA forward Ante Razov is expected to sit out eight to 12 weeks after undergoing arthroscopic surgery on his right ankle to remove bone spurs.

Razov, the club’s career scoring leader, had surgery Friday in Van Nuys and also signed a new contract, the team said.

He has scored 30 goals for the club, and is the second all-time leading scorer in Major League Soccer.

Mexico has submitted a bid to host the 2018 and 2022 World Cups. The United States is also bidding for those tournaments.

Manchester United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar set an English record for the number of minutes played without giving up a goal in United’s 1-0 victory over Everton.

He has gone 1,122 minutes without giving up a goal. He surpassed the previous mark of 1,103 minutes set by Reading’s Steve Death during the 1978-79 season.

Villarreal’s Jozy Altidore, a 19-year-old American striker, has joined second division Xerez on loan for the rest of the Spanish league season. He had scored one goal in six games.

Powell runs second in Jamaica

Asafa Powell clocked 47.75 seconds as he came in second in the 400 meters at the Queen’s/Grace Jackson Invitational at Kingston, Jamaica.

Annsert White won the race in 47.59.

Dwain Chambers ran his fastest 60 meters at the Birmingham Games in England, winning a heat in 6.52 seconds. . . . Lolo Jones won the 60-meter hurdles in 7.95 seconds at the Aviva International in Glasgow, Scotland.

Toronto Maple Leafs All-Star defenseman Tomas Kaberle is expected to be out of the lineup for four weeks after breaking a bone in his right hand. . . . John Gordy, 73; played for Lions

John Gordy, a three-time Pro Bowl offensive lineman for the Detroit Lions who helped form the NFL Players’ Assn., died Friday in Orange after a long battle with cancer. He was 73. Story, Section B.
