A big thank you to L.A. Times Travel for a magical road trip I took this month. Inspired by Kenneth Turan’s 2007 Monument Valley, Ariz., article [“Quiet on the Set,” March 4, 2007] and Karl Zimmermann’s La Posada article [“Make Tracks for La Posada, Nov. 9, 2008], I drove around northern Arizona and a bit of Utah for a week.
The first highlight was my stay at La Posada (Mary Colter’s gorgeous Harvey hotel in Winslow, Ariz.), where it snowed overnight. I loved visiting the Hubbell Trading Post near Ganado and staying in Chinle to visit Canyon de Chelly. Another highlight was the Goulding’s Lodge tour of Monument and Mystery valleys. Continuing the Colter theme, I visited the Grand Canyon and dined at the El Tovar hotel. What a great beginning to 2009.
