CALIFORNIA BRIEFING / LAKEWOOD

Authorities have identified the man who died after police used pepper spray and Tasers to subdue him as Chenard Kierre Winfield of Los Angeles.

Winfield, 32, was running naked through the streets of Lakewood on Saturday in the 5700 block of Silva Street about 10:15 p.m. when he was encountered by Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies responding to a disturbance call, said Deputy Aura Sierra.

“Despite their efforts to calm the male, he remained belligerent and advanced on the deputies in a threatening manner,” she said.

Winfield was subdued with Tasers and pepper spray before being handcuffed, Sierra said. When deputies realized the man was not breathing, they administered CPR until paramedics arrived. Winfield was taken to a local hospital, where he died.

“He was posing a threat, so they did resort to a less lethal type weapon,” Sierra said of the deputies’ use of Tasers. “Obviously, they’re not trying to kill the man, but they are trying to get him to comply.”
