Why it matters: It’s the opening round of the Southern Section Division II-AA playoffs, and Alta Loma has 6-foot-6 junior J.J. Obrien, who is averaging 27 points. His highest-scoring game was 40 points against San Gorgonio. Alta Loma finished third in the tough Baseline League behind Etiwanda and Rancho Cucamonga Los Osos. Edison is without 6-1 junior guard Kyle Boswell, who has been sidelined because of a back injury. Dylan Garrity, a 5-11 guard, is averaging 17 points and has helped replace Boswell’s scoring. Edison finished third in the Sunset League behind Los Alamitos and Huntington Beach Marina.
