Calm returned to Madagascar’s streets as the island’s president and opposition leader agreed to reduce tensions and negotiate further after weeks of violent demonstrations.
President Marc Ravalomanana and Andry Rajoelina held church-mediated talks and announced a series of measures to halt the turmoil, including an end to all types of provocation and disinformation, looting, demonstrations and political arrests.
Rajoelina accuses the president of misspending funds and says Ravalomanana is responsible for the deaths of at least 25 civilians killed by police fire during a Feb. 7 protest. In late January, opposition protests also sparked deadly riots.
