Aren’t there enough challenges with English already without worrying about the word “actress” and its possibly sexist origin? “Female actor” has the same derisive connotation as “male model,” which implies the profession primarily belongs to one gender with the opposite one being included by default or subservience.

But any article that results in a picture of the gorgeous Gene Tierney gracing its page can’t be all bad. Maybe the unintended consequence is that people will search out her classic films, such as “Laura,” and a renewed appreciation of her work will begin.
