Los Angeles county officials said Monday that the county would lose an estimated $1.4 billion over the next seven months for health and social services programs if the state goes forward with its plan to defer such payments starting next week.
The projected shortfall is too large for the county to cover for more than a short period -- even as some lawmakers caution that numerous programs such as welfare and foster care are mandated by law -- the county’s chief executive warned in a memo to Los Angeles County supervisors.
“At best, we can cover deferred payments for two months. Beyond that we would have to look at financing options,” said William T. Fujioka.
