A roadside bomb killed four U.S. soldiers in eastern Afghanistan, where the number of clashes and attacks in the first two months of 2009 more than doubled from the same period a year ago.

A U.S. statement said the four were based in Jalalabad.

Elsewhere in Afghanistan, a blast in the south killed two British soldiers, Britain’s Ministry of Defense said. A suicide bomber attacked a NATO convoy in Kabul, killing two passersby, and the mayor of Kandahar in southern Afghanistan survived a roadside bomb blast that killed a civilian.
