UC San Diego has been named the nation’s top surfing campus by Surfline.com, the surfing website.
The webbies considered proximity to good surf breaks, surf classes taught on campus and general surf-friendly ambience of campus life. Also-rans included UC Santa Barbara, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, UC Santa Cruz and the University of Hawaii.
The UC San Diego surf team, which practices at famed Black’s Beach, has won six titles at the annual National Scholastic Surfing Assn. tourney. The UCSD Surf Club, founded three decades ago, has 160 members, making it one of the largest clubs on campus.
The university will offer a freshman seminar April 1 on “The Physics of Surfing,” taught by David Sandwell, professor at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography.
