That’s rich

Funny that the same newspaper that denigrates the Yankees for shelling out bucks to free agents in hopes of reaching the World Series lambasted the Dodgers all season for not doing the very same thing.

A payroll does not win championships (witness the recent Yankees seasons). The players on the field do. And plenty of the Yankees responsible are players who rose through the ranks.

I’ll take the Steinbrenners. You can keep the McCourts.

In Wednesday’s edition, Bill Shaikin makes a clear case that to be competitive in today’s market, the Dodgers need to pay big bucks to get a premier pitcher like Cliff Lee or CC Sabathia. Then on Thursday, he takes a not-so-subtle jab at the Yankees’ World Series title, saying, “This is the championship the rest of America curses, the title the Yankees bought last winter. . . .”

I guess it’s OK if the home team buys championships, but it’s wrong otherwise. Just ask the Lakers.
