Boston 6, at Chicago 1: Jon Lester (12-7) gave up four hits over seven shutout innings, Mike Lowell and Victor Martinez each hit a home run and the Red Sox increased their American League wild-card lead to three games over Texas.
at Toronto 14, New York 8: Blue Jays rookie Randy Ruiz hit a run-scoring single during an eight-run fifth, then was hit in the face by a pitch later in the inning. Ruiz walked off the field without assistance and left the game. Derek Jeter had three hits and is four away from breaking the Yankees record held by Lou Gehrig (2,721).
at Baltimore 7, Texas 0: Brian Roberts, Jeff Fiorentino and Chad Moeller each had two hits and two runs batted in to help the Orioles win their second series since mid-July.
at Oakland 5, Seattle 2: Ichiro Suzuki’s 2,000th major league hit was overshadowed by the go-ahead grand slam Scott Hairston hit in the seventh inning.
at Cleveland 3, Minnesota 1: Michael Brantley hit a tiebreaking single with two outs in the seventh inning.
