A 10-year-old girl believed to have been sexually assaulted was found unresponsive at a Hawthorne residence Saturday morning and later pronounced dead, authorities said.
Sheriff’s deputies arrived at the 4800 block of West 132nd Street about 7:20 a.m. regarding a rescue call, said Sgt. Richard Pena of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
“They found an unresponsive 10-year-old white female,” he said. “The girl was transported to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead.”
Emergency room doctors said the girl’s body showed evidence she had been sexually assaulted.
Pena said the Los Angeles County coroner’s preliminary findings were inconclusive, but that the girl’s death is being treated as suspicious, pending autopsy results.
Her name was not released, and no one has been arrested, Pena said.
