Rising beer prices hard to swallow
Philip Sutton, owner of Skyscraper Brewing Co. in El Monte, says barley prices have soared and he cant even get the hops he prefers, forcing him to substitute some ingredients in his brews and raise prices.
Although production is rising, hops, which give beer its distinctive flavor, are in short supply.

Brewer Phillip Sutton doesn’t like having to substitute for the hops he usually uses in his recipes. “That makes a different beer,” he says. “Its still good but isnt what we would ideally have.
Sutton says the price of malted barley has risen more than 50% from a year ago and hops are up even more.
