Hot Property: Dean Torrence of Jan & Dean fame lists Hollywood home for rent

In the market for an endless summer? New to the Multiple Listing Service is a Los Angeles rental property owned by Dean Torrence. The singer-songwriter, best known as one half of the popular surf-rock duo Jan & Dean, asks $5,600 a month to lease the Hollywood Hills East home.

The country English manor, built by Evander Hoven in 1926, was home in the late 1930s to actor Humphrey Bogart. Found behind a wooden gate on a shaded lot near the Hollywood Reservoir, the property carries a storybook quality thanks to its thatched-style roof, stone accents and whimsical drawbridge.

Clad in hardwood flooring, the 2,081 square feet of living space includes leaded glass windows, a formal living room with beamed ceilings, a two-story stone fireplace, an office, three bedrooms and three full baths. Torrence, 74, co-founded Jan & Dean with high school friend Jan Berry in the 1950s and scored a number of commercial hits during the “surf rock” craze, including “Surf City” and “Dead Man’s Curve.” Following Berry’s death in 2004, Torrence has continued to perform as a guest of the Surf City All-Stars, a band comprised of original Beach Boys singers Al Jardine and David Marks.
