‘Laramie Project’ sequel to make L.A. debut run in September

“The Laramie Project: Ten Years Later” -- the stage sequel to the “The Laramie Project” -- will have its Los Angeles debut run in September at the L.A. Gay and Lesbian Center in Hollywood. The play revisits the citizens of Laramie, Wyo., where Matthew Shepard, a gay college student, was beaten to death in 1998.
The “Laramie” sequel debuted in 2009 and has since been performed throughout the country. (The play had its Orange County premiere run in April at the Chance Theatre in Anaheim Hills.) Like the first play, it was created by director Moises Kaufman and members of the Tectonic Theater Project, with a script derived from interviews conducted with people who live in Laramie.
The sequel features an interview with Aaron McKinney, one of the two men convicted of murdering Shepard. When the sequel premiered in 2009, theater companies in all 50 states came together to produce staged readings of the play on the same day.

“The Laramie Project: Ten Years Later” is scheduled to run Sept. 13 to Nov. 15 at the L.A. Gay and Lesbian Center.
The original “Laramie Project” play debuted in 2000 and was later turned into an HBO movie, directed by Kaufman.
