Best & Worst: 2010 Golden Globes

Opening the show, Gervais did a few funny bits, but none perhaps better than his compliment to the talented physicians Hollywood holds so dear: “Looking at all the [famous] faces here reminds me of some of the great work that’s been done this year -- by cosmetic surgeons.” Gervais, himself, admitted to getting a little nip/tuck too: “I’ve had a penis reduction. Just got the one now. And it is very tiny. But so are my hands. So when I’m holding it, it looks pretty big.... I wish I was doing that now instead of this, to be honest.” Oh, Ricky, how we do love your honesty.

We just heard the happy news that Michael C. Hall‘s cancer is in remission. So it was not just nice to see him looking well at the Golden Globes, but awesome to see him win the much-deserved award for best dramatic actor. Not to mention his nod to his tearful wife and “Dexter” costar Jennifer Carpenter.

Normally, no one remembers the part of an awards show when someone introduces the president of the presenting body. That won’t be the case for “Desperate Housewives” star Felicity Huffman, who had a heck of a time getting through her intro of Hollywood Foreign Press Assn. President Philip Berk. Felicity, you’ve been to enough of these things -- maybe you shouldn’t think about drinking till after you appear on stage.

The “Grey Gardens” star’s acceptance speech was heartfelt, we’re sure, but we couldn’t help fearing for her life with that creature from the jungles of Pandora consuming her shoulder. Click here for more on Golden Globes fashions.

Giving Colin Farrell a warm welcome and insulting him at the same time, Gervais began his introduction of the former bad boy with a few thoughts on diversity: “The Golden Globes... It doesn’t just celebrate talent, it celebrates difference. It crushes prejudice and stereotype. One stereotype I hate is that all Irishmen are just drunk, swear-y hell-raisers. Please welcome Colin Farrell!” Farrell took the dig in a stride, telling the audience that when he heard Ricky had specifically asked to introduce him he thought, “Oh, [no].”

Let’s be honest. When people heard that Ricky Gervais was hosting the Globes this year, a lot of Americans hit the Google. Gervais knows that most people have no idea that NBC’s hit, “The Office,” sprung from his hilarious mind (and not, say, its frontman, Steve Carell, pictured). Upon hearing that the jig was up, Carell used some colorful sign language and mouthed: “I will kill you.”

Martin Scorsese (pictured) and Robert De Niro have been friends and collaborators forever, and we laughed when De Niro -- presenting the Cecil B. DeMille Award to Scorsese -- joked about them being like an old married couple. But then he started talking about Marty making love to a film canister, and that’s not something we ever want to think about. Leave those jokes for your private conversations, Mr. De Niro.

William Hurt wins the hirsute award for his beard, which stole the spotlight when the best TV drama actor awards were announced. What’s he hiding in there? The secret to better healthcare? How “Lost” will end? Amelia Earhart‘s plane?

A decade-plus of being called “King of the World” has no doubt worn on Mr. Cameron. In his latest trip to the awards podium, the “Avatar” filmmaker attempted to confound the moniker-makers by speaking part of his acceptance speech in Na’Vi. Let’s see Ryan Seacrest try to call him Eyktan kifkey on the next red carpet.
