‘Life of Pi’ is a four-time winner at Visual Effects Society Awards

Ang Lee’s “Life of Pi” won four VES Awards at the 11th Visual Effects Society Awards on Tuesday evening at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.
“Life of Pi” -- which is nominated for 11 Academy Awards, including best film and director -- won for visual effects in a visual effects-driven motion picture, animated character in a live action feature motion picture for Richard Parker, FX and simulation animation in a live action feature motion picture for the “Storm of God” sequence, and compositing in a feature motion picture for “Storm of God.”
Lee also received the Visual Effects Society’s Visionary Award.

The Disney/Pixar animated film “Brave” also earned four VES honors for animation in an animated feature motion picture, animated character in an animated feature motion picture for Merida, created environment in an animated feature motion picture for “The Forest” and FX and simulation animation in an animated feature motion picture.
“The Impossible” won for supporting visual effects in a feature motion picture, while “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” earned a VES for virtual cinematography in a live action motion picture.
“The Avengers” received VES awards for created environment in a live action motion picture for “Midtown Manhattan” and models in a feature motion picture.
On the television side, HBO’s “Game of Thrones” dominated the evening with four wins -- visual effects in a broadcast program, animated character in a commercial or broadcast program, created environment in a commercial or broadcast program and compositing in a broadcast program for episode 210.
Episode 308 of HBO’s “Boardwalk Empire” earned the honor for supporting visual effects in a broadcast program.
Richard Edlund (“Star Wars’) received the Lifetime Achievement Award.
