Julia Roberts to star in, produce ‘Batkid’ movie

The pint-size crusader known as Batkid has made a powerful new ally, and it’s none other than Julia Roberts.

The Oscar-winning actress is attached to star in and produce a movie about Miles Scott, the young leukemia patient who charmed America when he donned a mini-batsuit and defended San Francisco from supervillains during a Make-a-Wish event in 2013. New York-based film sales company Submarine Entertainment made the announcement Friday.

The movie is to be a narrative remake of director Dana Nachman’s documentary “Batkid Begins: The Wish Heard Around the World,” which is scheduled to bow at the Slamdance Film Festival in Park City, Utah, on Saturday.

Nachman’s film chronicles how 25,000 San Francisco residents and President Obama himself helped make 5-year-old Miles’ day by participating in his costumed adventure, which also became a viral sensation online. (Miles is said to be in remission.)

Nachman, who will serve as an executive producer on the remake, said in a statement that it’s “thrilling” that Roberts and her team watched “Batkid” and would “dedicate their time and creative capital to make sure the widest audience possible will know and love Miles’ story.”
