New single: Prefuse 73’s remix of Ultraista’s ‘You’re Out’

The rollout for Nigel Godrich’s Ultraista project was surprisingly low-key. Here was the guy who produced all your favorite Radiohead albums (along with work from Beck and Air), starting a new band.

Sure, he also plays in Thom Yorke’s Atoms for Peace project, but if George Martin or Bob Clearmountain emerged with a midcareer rock project, wouldn’t it be top priority for music nerds to go see it?

L.A. fans get a chance to do so on Thursday at Hollywood Forever, where Godrich’s trio with drummer Joey Waronker and singer Laura Bettinson will headline in the Masonic Lodge. We at Pop & Hiss have a bit of the studio rat in us, so we’re happy to host a new single by Ultraista, a remix of its song “You’re Out” by the omnivorous beatsmith Prefuse 73 (listen below).

The tune is a sound designer’s dream, all perfectly arranged slivers of disembodied voices and digital hiss given a stuttering, beat-scene spine. The original is more minimalist and meditative, but Godrich’s time in Atoms for Peace seems to have spurred his interest in how to make wonky electronica work in a physical, live-band setting.
