Listen: Giorgio Moroder enlivens Coldplay’s ‘Midnight’ in new remix

Good news for bummed-out disco fans.
Mere days after Giorgio Moroder announced that he’d canceled a planned May 10 gig at the Hollywood Bowl -- a show that would’ve paired the groundbreaking Italian beatmeister with Nile Rodgers and Chic -- he unveiled a sweet new remix of Coldplay’s “Midnight” on Monday.
The producer’s lengthy reworking, which climaxes in a surging synth fantasia complete with robot voices, adds some verve to Coldplay’s rather sedate original, one of nine songs slated to appear on the English band’s upcoming “Ghost Stories” album.
Last month at Sony Pictures Studios in Culver City, Coldplay played all of “Ghost Stories,” due out May 19, for an invitation-only audience of fans, journalists and VIPs; the new music involves lots of slow tempos and moody electronics, with echoes of such sadsack acts as Bon Iver and the xx.

So maybe Moroder’s “Midnight” is something to cheer up soon-to-be-bummed Coldplay fans too?
