Ratings for ABC’s Oscars telecast on Sunday night appear to be off from last year’s audience level, according to early data from Nielsen.
Based on the ratings from Nielsen’s overnight numbers from 56 large markets, the telecast, hosted by Neil Patrick Harris, averaged a 25 rating and a 38% share of the homes using television from 8:30 p.m. to midnight EST. The telecast scored a 14.2 rating in those markets among viewers in the 18-to-49 age group favored by advertisers.

The overnights last year, when Ellen DeGeneres was host, showed a 27.9 rating.
The numbers will change when the full national ratings are tabulated and released Tuesday, but the average figuring in smaller markets tends to be lower than the overnight number.
Last year’s Oscars telecast delivered a household rating of 24.7 and averaged 43.7 million viewers when the final numbers were in. The rating among viewers in the 18-to 49 demographic was 13.1.
Ratings were highest in Los Angeles, where the telecast scored a 33.5. Chicago was second with a 32.5, followed by New York with a 32.4.
