Trevor Noah’s ‘Daily Show’ ratings: Debut draws 1.1 million viewers

The critics were mixed on Trevor Noah, but viewers gave him a respectable “Daily Show” opening in the ratings.

Noah, the South African-born comic tapped as Jon Stewart’s replacement on Comedy Central’s nightly news spoof, drew 1.1 million total viewers for his first outing on Monday, according to Nielsen.

That’s roughly in line with the 1.2 million Stewart was attracting earlier this year, shortly before he retired from the program.

To give the program an extra push, Viacom aired Monday’s “Daily Show” on a dozen other networks it owns, including MTV and VH1. All told, an average of 3.5 million viewers tuned in. Comedy Central estimated that a grand total of 7.5 million viewers watched at least a few minutes of the program.

As for the critics, some were kind, others less so. The Times’ Robert Lloyd found Noah “charming and composed.” But Deadline called the first program “mostly flat.”
