Events: Boyle Heights Heroes, Golden Gopher turns 10, bread baking at Grist & Toll

On Sunday, Breed Street Shul Project is hosting “Boyle Heights Heroes,” a series of conversations featuring a panel of Boyle Heights’ famous foodies. The panel will be moderated by Evan Kleiman, host of KCRW-FM’s “Good Food” and panelists include Izzy Freeman, owner of Izzy’s Deli in Santa Monica; Armando De La Torre, owner of Guisado’s Tacos in Boyle Heights; and Judy Zeidler, a TV show host and author. The panel begins at 2:30 p.m. and will focus on the food of Boyle Heights and how it has become a factor in the neighborhood’s culture. After the program, walking tours of Boyle Heights will be led by docents from the Jewish Historical Society of Southern California. The entire event is free. The Breed Street Shul, 247 N. Downtown bar Golden Gopher is celebrating its 10th anniversary on Thursday from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. Golden Gopher is the first property of Cede Moses’ 213 Ventures, a group of downtown bars and restaurants. Grist & Toll, Southern California’s first whole-grain flour mill to open in more than 80 years, will be offering a bread-baking class this summer for bakers of all skill levels. Don Guerra of Barrio Bread will lead the first class on July 19 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Students will learn the differences between commercial and wild yeast and what makes bread “artisan.” Each student will go home with two proofing baskets, two baking linens, a dough scraper, sourdough culture, and sample bread formulas.
