Audio slide show: L.A. scale is worth its weight in dimes
The vintage scale stands outside the Ross Cutlery shop in downtown L.A. like a relic from another era, a time when public weighing scales were as common as ATMs are now. It does serious business. Each week, up to 1,200 people weigh themselves here. They’ve been hopping on and off the machine for more than 30 years, ever since owner Allen Wattenberg found the scale at a Florida antique store.
