Deputy kills mountain lion after recent sightings in Rancho Cucamonga

A sheriff’s deputy shot and killed a mountain lion over the weekend in Rancho Cucamonga amid warnings about recent sightings along foothill neighborhoods.
The mountain lion was one of two cougars spotted jumping through backyards in the 8800 block of Somerset Drive, said Jodi Miller, a spokeswoman for the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department.
The sightings prompted deputies to warn residents who live in the neighborhood near Beryl Park and the 210 Freeway, to stay indoors. Soon after, a lone adult lion was spotted in a corner of a yard in the 6300 block of Moonstone Avenue.
The lion was deemed an “imminent threat to public safety,” so a deputy shot and killed it, the sheriff’s department said in a statement.
A necropsy has been planned.
Sheriff’s officials have urged residents to avoid jogging, walking or hiking at dawn, dusk and at night, when mountain lions are most active.
In March, a mountain lion that killed a 100-pound German shepherd named Princess set off a widespread search. It was never found.
